• explain basic organization of a computer
system
• explain different types of input and output
devices
• define software and its classification
• distinguish between system software and
application software

Needed
• Slides
4 Presentation
Description
The Facilitator is expected to
follow the Presentation Slides as a guideline for the flow of the session. The
description of each slide is as follows.
4.1 Slide 2
Set the right objectives to the
participants. Explain to them the use of gaining computer knowledge to use them
in their day-to-day activities.
4.2 Slides 3
and 4
Ask the participants to share what
they know about computers. Allow a few students to respond.
explain to them the advantage of
having computer knowledge. Make them understand how computers changed the way
the people live in society.
4.3 Slide 5
Ask the participants to define what
a computer is. Make them understand the need to store data and focus on
undertanding the terms store, retrieve and process.
4.4 Slide 6
Ask a few questions to the
participants like:
1. What is the cost of a pen?
2. Price and number of pages of a
specific book? Accept few responses, and derive the definition of “data” from
the responses given by participants and form a meaningful statement like, “The
cost of The Fundamentals of Computers is Rs 60 and it contains 50 pages,” which
defines an information.
Now allow one of the participants
to read the definition from the slide.
4.5 Slide 7
Ask the participants to list the
places where computers are used and for what purpose.
Expected Responses:
1. People use computers in banks to
store data about account holders.
2. People use computers to
communicate with friends. Try to derive all the advantages of computers from
the responses.
5 Practice Exercises Review 1- Answer Key
1 - Elecrtonic
Machine
2 - Information
3 - CPU
4 - Central
Processing Unit
5 - Accuracy,
Storage, Diligence
6 Slide 9
Explain what is Hardware and
Software and ask participants to list a few hardware devices.
6.1 Slide 10, 11
and 12
Present the slides and ask
participants to identify the different types of devices.
6.2 Slide 13
Ask participants to think how a computer
works. Give them a minute and allow them to respond.
Expected Responses: with power,
operating system, control unit, software. Define the term software, and allow
participants to list few software they know. Then different type of software
(System Software and Application Software).
6.3 Slides 14
and 15
Ask one participant to read the
slide.
6.4 Slide 16
Ask participants questions like:
1. What is their Class 12
percentage? Elicit responses. Now ask how they were able to remember their
marks/percentage.
Expected Responses:
1. I know
2. I remember
3. I recollect
Prompt and throw questions to the
participants until they answer “Memory”.
Now ask one participant to read the
slide and explain the terms “Data to be processed” and “Instructions required for
processing” are stored.
6.5 Slide 17
Expain the terms “Volatile” and
“Non-Volatile”.
6.6 Slide 18
Make participants understand
primary memory units store data until the “process is done”. The data stored is
not permanent. Like: The text written on paper with a pencil (where the data is
not stored parmanently).
6.7 Slide 19
Make participants understand, data
stored in secondary memory devices is permanent. Like: The text written on a
paper with a pen (where the data is stored parmanently).
6.8 Slide 20
Make participants understand, data
stored in cache memory is temporary. Cache memory holds data and instructions
that are most frequently accessed by an executing program. Like: The text
written on paper, just for quick reference.
7 Practice Exercises Review 2 - Answer Key
1 - C
2 - A
3 - D
4 - Digital
Versatile Disk
5 - Laser Printer,
Dot Matrix Printer
6 - Bar Code Reader
8 Slide 22,
Operating System
Review question. Ask what is
software, and make them understand the uses of operating system.
8.1 Slide 23
Display the slide and explain each
service with an example.
8.2 Slide 24
Show participants the slide and
explain the different layers involved in an operating system and their
functions.
8.3 Slide 25
Display the slide and use it as a
recap for the previous slide.
8.4 Slides 26
and 27
Discuss the different types of
operating systems. List few devices where RTOS is used.
8.5 Slide 28
Ask a question to the participants:
1. Think about the scenario where
you peform only one action/task at once,
allow few participants to answer,
and finally conclude human body is designed in such a way where we perform
multiple action/task at once. Make participants understand the term “Single
user”, “Single tasking” means what. Before moving to next slide talk about
multitasking
8.6 Slide 29,
Single user/Multitasking OS
Ask one participant to read the
slide and explain. Ask the participants to list few actions which we perform at
same time which helps the participants to understand what multitasking means.
8.7 Slide 30,
Multi user/Multitasking OS
Make sure what “multi user” means,
and how multiple users can acces one system.
If Ubuntu system is available, show
them by login with different users into same system.

8 - C
10 Slides 31-40
Ask participants a question:
1. How people in olden days used to
communicate with each other who are staying away.
Expected Responses:
1. Letters, telephones
With that references ask
participants to list the drawbacks in that system and how reliable they are.
talk about how the networking
system and the advantages.
Explain about the different type of
computer networks avaiable like PAN, LAN, WAN, MAN.
10.1 Slides 41-56
Just discuss about, have they heard
about network/chain business.
Allow few participants to explain
how those business works.
Very important in the process make
them understand how the people are linked with each other at different levels.
Now make them understand the different type of topologies and the difference
between them.
10.2 Slides
57-59
Explain the different OSI Network
Model Layers.
Key Points to discuss:
1. How the data flows from one
system to another system
2. Advantages and disadvantages of
network models
3. Functionalities at different
levels
10.3 Slides
60-62
Explain about different Internet
Models. How it is different from OSI model.
Functionalities performed at
different layers.
